A Day on Fitzroy Island with Raging Thunder

Fitzroy Island is 29km South East of  Cairns and just a 45 minute trip from the Marina.

There is ample parking in the nearby carpark opposite the check-in desk and then you’re off to the Island. We headed out with Raging Thunder on a day tour as they offer a range of water activities once you’re on the island. We booked the activity pass 1 as we also planned to hike on the island and we have our own snorkelling gear. If you don’t then book activity Pass 2. For an additional cost you can also hire kayaks, which looked fun.

Activity Pass 1:

  • Return ferry transfer
  • Choice of snorkel hire OR Glass Bottom Boat
  • Use of Ocean Trampoline (seasonal) & Paddle Skis
  • Picnic Lunch
  • Reef tax

There were impressive dramatic storm skies as we left the mainland, but landing on the island at Welcome Bay the sun was shining.

We headed straight on the hike clockwise passed the turtle sanctuary and to the lighthouse up the old steep 4×4 track, for views of little Fitzroy Island.  We then hiked to the summit at 269m which also had amazing views, before the descent down rocky steps.

We arrived down from the hike for lunch and drinks at Foxy’s Bar, as it was a Sunday there was live music. In the afternoon we walked across to Nudey Beach, a beautiful coral beach which is always in the top 100 beaches. The waters were quite turbid so we didn’t get the crystal blue waters, but it was very dramatic with the bright white coral and storm skies which had started to roll in.

Next up was our glass bottom boat trip, due to the water quality we didn’t see a thing, but the tour guide Levi was brilliant, we learnt so much about the reef and the area, it was well worth the tour.

We rounded off the day with a walk to the secret gardens and the boarded the catamaran for our trip back to shore.

There is camping avalaible on the island as well as the resort. With at least 2 or 3 full days of activities it would be well worth staying longer if you want to relax and soak up the beautiful island.IMG_2150

Another beautiful Island and another great day. For information on the walks, checkout parks and wildlife.
